Overview:
The Talon Golf Course at
Grayhawk came first, with Senior PGA Tour player David Graham and architect Gary
Panks paving the way. The year was 1994, and big-time golf in Arizona was just
beginning to bloom in the desert. Talon certainly fits into that category, with
mountain backdrops and sweeping vistas galore. Especially memorable are the
par-3 11th hole, called "Swinging Bridge,'' and the par-4 13th, infamously known
as "Heaven or Hell'' because of its risk-reward value that is placed on the tee
shot from 305 yards. Go ahead and go for it. Hey, you didn't come all this way
to Arizona just to lay up, right? Talon has a special link to the late LPGA star
Heather Farr, who is honored with a bronze statue on the first tee. There also
is a Heather Farr room inside the clubhouse, which ranks among the best golf
facilities in the state open to the public. Just remember, you've got to put the
lights out on Talon's undulating greens if you hope to play to your
handicap.
